Historically, many homesteads had several different outbuildings that functioned for specific purposes: livestock barns, corn cribs, spring houses, kitchens, smokehouses, wash houses, equipment sheds, chicken houses, tobacco barns, a privy, and the list goes on…
Our shed is my husband’s domain: it will function partly as a conditioned workshop for my husband, storage space for outdoor equipment, gardening supplies, and tools, and it may eventually have a “lean-to” addition that can serve other purposes.
This shed was pre-fabricated but we were able to customize the design, materials, and size. It is from North Carolina Shed Depot and is high quality both in construction and materials. We chose board-and-batten hardiboard siding sheltered by a metal roof and wooden, basic paneled “barn” doors that pierce the center of the shed. We opted for no windows. Currently it rests on concrete block piers. The interior is utilitarian with exposed wood frame but it will be finished with plywood and the floor covered with a durable material. Lighting and electric has already been installed and on one side is a small loft for extra storage.
I can’t wait to plant some pretty landscaping around it and give it a little touch of farmhouse flare. I have dreams of someday adding a little greenhouse addition to one side made from old windows!
I love how it fits in nicely with the style of our house. Little by little, our homestead plan is coming together and it is exciting to see it become a reality 🙂
