Our heirloom vegetable garden is coming along! The lettuce is looking great and the spinach is sprouting. Our peas and beans look very healthy; they have sprouted and grown significantly all in the past week!
this photo was taken a few days ago- the beans have grown much taller than this now! |

Today we planted various kinds of peppers, collard greens, squash, carrots, and heirloom tomatoes. I’ll admit the thing I am most looking forward to are the tomatoes. We planted brandywine red/pink, brandywine yellow, cherokee purple, pineapple, and big rainbow varieties. A tall, “fence-like” support will allow the tomatoes to grow without using cages.

We would like to plant more of everything if we can somehow prepare another bed. Otherwise, we will just reseed the beds we have after the first harvest. I have yet to plant the pumpkins and I’d love to be able to find space for onions and potatoes. There’s always next year!
I also want to thank everyone for their kind words and sympathies regarding Mr. Rue and Chamomile. I will miss them very much. If you’ve had chickens, you understand how difficult it can be not to get attached to your birds. Have a wonderful week!

I'd love to know how the pineapple tomatoes turn out! Have you had them before? I'm growing all red or pink heirlooms this year. Maybe next year I'll get more adventurous! π

Hi Missy! No, This is our first year trying pineapple tomatoes yet and I can't wait till they come in! The grower we got them from said the pineapple variety is a low-acid, light, more fruity flavor that goes well in salads and the like. We thought we'd try a few new ones this year π

You have so much energy to get all of this planted and take care of chickens (will you get more?), and throw fabulous parties, and do all of your home projects! And you'll have such a bounty of tomatoes — YUM! LOVE tomatoes. We just put a cherry tomato on our deck in a huge pot, and it's blomming already — I'm going weave the vines through the deck slats for a trellised look. Wish me luck.
Oh and can't wait to see those pumpkins come fall.

aw, thanks Camille. You are sweet. Truth is I don't get enough sleep and am always running out of time trying to accomplish my to-do list! But the planting actually went really fast! You will love your cherry tomato plant- they do well with a "trellis." Pots are great for tomatoes and you can do lots of peppers too!
